Ccreated in July 1997, the Department of Public Works oversees four divisions: Maintenance; Roads; Solid Waste; and Water and Wastewater Services (County Code, Public Works Article, secs. 1-101 through 5-314).

MAINTENANCE DIVISION
The Maintenance Division maintains County office buildings, boat landings, parking lots, and radio tower sites.

ROADS DIVISION
The Roads Division oversees the County roads and condusts road repairs, paving, drainage, limbing, cutting grass, and plowing snow. The Division maintains and installs traffic signs, marks County roadways, processes commercial entrance bonds and road bonds, and periodically inspects newly constructed roads and bridges to assure they meet County specifications (County Code, Public Works Article, secs. 1-101 through 1-301).

SOLID WASTE DIVISION
The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the County landfill and transfer stations (County Code, Public Works Article, secs. 2-101 through 2-201). The Division sees to the proper disposal of all refuse with the use of heavy equipment. Employees travel to the transfer stations within the County to remove all refuse brought in that day. Refuse then is carried to the Central Landfill where it is placed on the landfill hill to be buried.

Under the County recycling program, recycling bins are placed in strategic locations throughout the County, and their contents are picked up, delivered to the central landfill, sorted, and sold. Employees in this division operate heavy equipment and trucks, monitor transfer stations, recycle and maintain the operations to comply with Maryland Department of Environment regulations.

WATER & WASTEWATER SERVICES DIVISION
The Water and Wastewater Division manages multiple service areas, and provides water and wastewater services throughout the north end of the County. The Division operates, maintains, repairs, and installs public water and sewer lines; and operates pump stations, and water sewage treatment plants. To provide potable water to residents, plant operators run water treatment plants, and oversee water testing for compliance with federal and State regulations, and for construction in new subdivisions (County Code, Public Works Article, secs. 5-101 through 5-314).

A water advisory board and a wastewater advisory board advise this division.
