[photo, A young bicycle rider, Glen Burnie, Maryland] Bicycle riding in Maryland was publicized in 1989 when the first Cycle Across Maryland was ridden. The event was held annually through June 2008. In 2005 began the Tour du Port, raced in Baltimore, and next scheduled for October 9, 2011.

On June 18, 2011, Cycle Maryland had its kick-off event at Cross Island Trail, a linear park that spans Kent Island in Queen Anne's County. Cycle Maryland's website lists events and resources for cyclists statewide.

Interest in cycling is maintained by local groups, such as the Baltimore Bicycling Club. Trail systems for bikes are promoted by the Department of Natural Resources. Also, some local governments have developed master plans to incorporate bicyles as a regular mode of travel within their jurisdictions.
